9,000 Years of Niagara-on-the-Lake History: A View from King’s Point

Martin Cooper joins us to talk about the area along our waterfront known as Kings Point.  Learn about the significance of the site and its archeological history.

Martin Cooper has been involved in archaeology in Ontario for over forty years. He received his honours B.A. in Anthropology at Western University and his M.A. at the University of Toronto, where he is currently completing his PhD.  Mr. Cooper is a Senior Archaeologist and Senior Associate at Archaeological Services Inc. (ASI), the largest heritage consulting company in Ontario.  He has directed hundreds of precontact, historic indigenous and historic Euro-Canadian archaeological assessments throughout Ontario.  He is particularly familiar with the Indigenous history of the Niagara area as one of his main areas of interest is the Neutral Nation’s occupation of the southeastern Niagara peninsula.

Cooper has experience working for Indigenous communities on heritage projects, peer reviews, as well as treaty and land claims issues.  He has also directed Indigenous engagement and consultation programs for private and public sector clients throughout Canada. He is currently managing the Indigenous engagement component of ASI’s Archaeological Management Plan for the Region of Niagara.
